ZuZu
She moves along the fence in the late afternoon, when the light gets warm and the birds make mistakes.
Mom says her name softly.āØ
Lovey Biscuits.
I protest softly.āØ
This is still my window.
She is black and careful and always listening to more than one direction at once.

MaiTai
She caught a lizard today.
Right outside the glass.
Very efficient.
No wasted motion.āØ
I moved closer for educational purposes.
ZuZu held a security meeting.
ZuZu
I issued a series of low growls to establish jurisdiction.āØ
My tail doubled in size.āØ
The lizard did not appreciate the legal complexities of the situation.
Mai Tai attempted to smell the glass.
MaiTai
I was not trying to help.āØ
I was trying to participate.
The clear barrier is unfair and poorly designed.
ZuZu
Mom stood behind us, one hand resting on my back while we supervised the entire operation.
She did not stop the hunt.āØ
She did not stop us watching.
Sometimes she lets the world explain itself.
MaiTai
Later she went outside.
She crouched low in the garden and held her hand still until Lovey Biscuits leaned into it ā the way she always does, like contact is allowed but ownership is not.
This took many months to arrange.āØ
Trust grows at the speed of safety.
Mom learned patience for her.āØ
I hope she remembers she already has it for me.
ZuZu
Mom gives us our afternoon snack inside.
Then she takes food out to the garden too.
Not because Lovey Biscuits asks properly.āØ
Not because she belongs to us.
Because she is here.
MaiTai
Mom says she is āsweet."
But she is wild.
She accepts affection and then leaves again into her own decisions.āØ
Mom never asks her to choose differently.
ZuZu
When Mom comes back in, she smells like sun and dust and effort.
She touches our heads the same as always.āØ
But I notice she looks at us a moment longer while we eat.
Not worried.āØ
Not sad.
Aware.
MaiTai
We have bowls that appear.āØ
Water that waits.āØ
Windows that close against the cold.
I considered saving a piece of my snack for her.āØ
I did not.
But I considered it very sincerely.
ZuZu
She has skill and caution and whatever the day provides.
Mom does not make speeches about this.āØ
She just keeps an extra bowl ready.
Mom does not try to solve this difference.āØ
She softens around it.
She feeds where she can.āØ
She warms what she can.āØ
She leaves the rest alone.
MaiTai
I think this is what gratitude looks like to humans.
Not saying thank you to the air.āØ
Remembering, while eating, that not every meal is guaranteed ā and sharing when it is.
ZuZu
There is a box with blankets on top of the car, tucked under cover where rain cannot fall and danger must climb.
Lovey Biscuits sleeps there sometimes.āØ
Not every night.
Mom fixes the blankets anyway.
MaiTai
Tonight we will sleep inside.āØ
Lovey Biscuits will sleep somewhere she chooses.
Both can be true.
Mom will still put food out tomorrow.
